About
the Friday Shakespeare Club
The
Friday Shakespeare Club is a women's club, founded in 1903.
We are a literary club, dedicated to the study of the works
of William Shakespeare. We meet twice a month from October
to the beginning of June.
Members
vote on plays to be studied in the season. Four plays are
chosen and members divided into groups, one group for each
play. These committees work together to lay out a course of
lectures, discussions, demonstrations, readings, and video
clips (and whatever else the committee might come up with)
to present that particular play to members. The rest of the
members are expected to do the courtesy of reading in advance
the play to be presented.
There
are four social functions each season as well, the President's
Luncheon (to honor past presidents of the club), the Holiday
Party, Shakespeare's Birthday Luncheon, and the Annual Picnic.
At the President's Luncheon and Birthday Luncheon the club
invites guest speakers. Past speakers have included the artisitic
director of Shakespeare Santa Cruz, Paul Whitworth and Michael
Warren, respected Shakespeare scholar from UCSC.
Recently we have also added 3 movie days to our club season, sharing films about Shakespeare or his works.
